2022.224.5: Scene 5: The Studio
PrintsThree large black-and-white prints abut to show a whole scene of a female artist in her studio surrounded by her artworks, at life-size scale. At the center of the room the artist sits on a chair with wheels, one leg bent and resting on the footrest and the other leg extended. She wears a sweatshirt, sweatpants, sneakers, and a small apron. She holds a large paint palette in her left hand, which has several globs of paint on it; she holds her paint brush in her right hand and positions it against the palette. She faces the viewer and looks directly out at the viewer. On the floor to the right of the artist is a small padded stool with wheels, two used tubes of paint, a paintbrush, a pail, and a small cloth. There is also a partially-carved woodblock with the image of a mother holding an infant to her chest. Two woodcarving tools (burins) lie on top of the block. To the left of the block, sitting on the floor, is a box with more woodcarving tools inside it. On the floor to the left of the artist is a long electrical cord, which coils and runs across the floor from the corner in the upper left to the edge of the scene. Directly above the artist, on the back wall of the room, is a window with its blinds down. Hanging on the wall to the right is an unframed painting showing two women, one who has her head on the other one’s shoulder. Behind the artist, leaning against the back wall, are more unframed paintings and one is rolled. The painting visible in the front shows a heavily pregnant woman in profile, against a patterned background. Leaning against the wall on the left are two more large, unframed paintings. The one in the back is incomplete, tall, and rectangular. It shows a sketch of a woman’s bust in profile, with a dotted circular line running through it. The work in front of it is smaller and horizontal. It shows a heavily pregnant woman sitting on a bed against several large pillows, her legs criss-crossed and looking directly out at the viewer. She is wearing a robe that is open, showing her chest and belly. Leaning against the wall on the right is another large painting, which is only partially visible and contains sketchy lines denoting a figure’s arm.
