Description
Large deep bowl with angled sides, the base flat with a lightly concave center; red earthenware lightly burnished and decorated on the exterior around the lip with a wide band painted in pale brown slip before firing; encrustations from burial. Early Yangshao culture, Banpo type. From the middle Yellow River valley region, Shaanxi province.

Compare to:
Bowl of similar shape and decoration excavated from a Banpo site in Beishouling, Baoji, Shaanxi province. See Zhongguo shehui kexue yuan, Kaogu yanjiusuo [Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences], Baoji Beishouling (Beijing: Wenwu chubanshe, 1983), 94, fig. 79.3, and pl. 28.2.
