The conference is being organized by the Center for Advanced Visual / Studies at MIT (CAVS/MIT), Professor Steve Benton, Director, in collaboration with the / Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Evangelos Venizelos, Minister of Culture, the Foundation for / Hellenic Culture, and the European Cultural Center of Delphi, Professor Vassilis Karasmanis, / Director. Renowned artist Vassilakis Takis will be the Honorary Chairman of the Conference. / The SKY ART Conference 2002 is chaired by Professor Otto Piene, Director Emeritus of / CAVS/MIT, and co-chaired by Elizabeth Goldring, Senior Fellow at CAVS/MIT. Laura Knott, / Research Affiliate at CAVS/MIT, is the Project Coordinator of the Conference.

Honorary / Chairman: Harold Edgerton. / 1982: Held in Linz, Austria, and hosted by Ars Electronica. Yash Pal, then Secretary-General of / UNISPACE, the Second United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of / Outer Space, served as Honorary Chairmen of the conference. This gathering featured the / German-language premiere of the sky opera Icarus by Paul Earls, Otto Piene and Ian Strasfogel; / Sky Kiss by Charlotte Moorman and Otto Piene; and International Alarm, an environmental / audio work by Elizabeth Goldring with Edward LePoulin. / 1983: Hosted by the city of Munich and BMW, the SKY ART Conference brough the sky opera / Icarus outdoors and used floating laser projections and Piene's flying and inflated sculptures as / props. Japanese sky art was represented by a number of participants including the founder of the / Kite Museum of Tokyo, sculptor Tsutomu Hiroi, who exhibited and flew miniature kites. The / exhibtion at the BMW Museum included Christo's drawings for Surrounded Islands, Heinz / Mack's reflective programmed light sculptures, work by Tal Streeter and Charles Ross' Solar / Burns. The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft was represented by a large group of scientists including / Reimar Luest, the President of Max-Planck-Gesellschaft and President Elect of the European / Space Agency - serving as Honorary Chairman of the Conference..[sic] / 1986: Desert Sun/Desert Moon in Lone Pine, CA, was the inaugural event for the SKY ART / Conference with events reaching from Cambridge, MA, to California and Alaska and as far away / as Brazil and Paris. The actual fourth SKY ART Conference gathering took place at CAVS/MIT / from September 29 to October 3, 1986. The popularity of the conference as a forum for idea / exchange and inspiration was evident in the attendance of approximately 150 sky artists from / near and far. The shared enthusiasm of the attendant participants resulted in the Sky and Space / Artists' Manifesto, which was presented at the UN Conference on the Peaceful Use of Sky and / Space in Paris.
