Attired in sumptuous ivory robes adorned with a brocade of gold leaf, Santa Rosa, or Saint Rose of Lima, is depicted practicing needlework before a vision of Jesus as a child. The saint was known as the first person born in the American hemisphere to be canonized. A lay member of the Dominican order in life, Saint Rose is globally revered as the patron saint of embroidery and gardening, as well as the patron saint of The Philippines. Scenes from Santa Rosa’s life can be seen in the background, including references to the saint’s vegetarianism and efforts to combat poverty.
