Inscriptions and Marks
  • stamp: spine, second panel, gold leaf, stamped, French: LIVRE / DE / PEISAGE ["Book of Landscape"]
  • watermark: There are a number of watermarks and partial watermarks on the various prints in the album. A few of these can be identified with the usual watermark directories. Some of the Perelles in all of the series prior to the Visscher series have a circular mark rather like a wheel or a clock dial closest to Churchill #274, c. 1719; these have an illegible countermark of a name in a cartouche. They may be associated with A. Malmenaide. The Visschers are marked with a crowned eagle ("Arms of Austria"), closest to Churchill #282, which is described as "17th century." Some of the Buytewechs have the watermark of a vase of flowers. The Perelle series that closes the album has the watermark of a cardinal's hat or the countermark of a cartouche with the name Cluzel, a papermaker whose earliest marks date from the mid seventeenth century. Together, these seems to suggest that the album was compiled in the late 17th century or at the beginning of the 18th century.

Notes
[1] At the sale, the album was purchased by “Reznis” which is likely a partial anagram of Zinser’s name. He is known to have been the owner of the volume at his death.
[2] Stogden worked with the estate of Richard Zinser to sell material that the latter had retained until he died in 1984.
