Description
Oblong quatrefoil cup with lobed sides tapering inward to a short quatrefoil foot mirroring the shape of the vessel; molded relief decoration of a fish on the vessel floor and a flower on each of the four walls; white earthenware with lead-fluxed, copper-green splashed glaze over interior and exterior, including the base. Copper-splashed sancai ware. From northern China, Henan, Hebei, or Shaanxi province.
Commentary
Compare to:
(1) Ding ware cup of the same lobed form with similar molded design of a fish excavated in 1997 from a Tang-dynasty tomb in Jianci village, Quyang county, Hebei province, now in the Hebei Center for Cultural Heritage Preservation. Zhongguo chutu ciqi quanji [Complete Collection of Chinese Ceramics Unearthed in China], vol. 3: Hebei (Beijing: Kexue chubanshe, 2008), no. 32.
(2) Xing ware cup of the same lobed form with similar molded design of a fish excavated in 1992 from a Tang site in Shushan township, Wuwei county, Chaohu, Anhui province, now in the Wuwei Office for Management of Cultural Relics. See Zhongguo chutu ciqi quanji [Complete Collection of Chinese Ceramics Unearthed in China], vol. 8: Anhui (Beijing: Kexue chubanshe, 2008), no. 75.
(3) Late Tang green-and-white sancai dish of similar form with molded relief decoration on the floor attributed to the Gongyi kilns in Henan province excavated in 1983 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, now in the Yangzhou Museum. See Zhongguo taoci quanji [The Complete Works of Chinese Ceramics], vol. 5: Sui, Tang [Sui and Tang dynasties] (Shanghai: Shanghai renmin meishu chubanshe, 2000), no. 216, pp. 200 and 287.
